Alex Rodriguez is out of the New York Yankees’ lineup, this time as a precaution after playing two straight games since coming off the disabled list. Manager Joe Girardi says he’s just keeping his slugger fresh as he recovers from a strained left calf. Girardi says he likely will not let Rodriguez play an extended stretch of games for another week.

The New York Mets welcomed back one star player while they wait for another to get healthy. Carlos Beltran returned from offseason knee surgery and made his 2010 debut for the Mets, batting cleanup and playing center field against the San Francisco Giants on Thursday night. Manager Jerry Manuel had written shortstop Jose Reyes’ name in the lineup.

Seattle Mariners pitcher Cliff Lee is expected to miss the first month of the season because of his strained abdominal muscle. The left-hander threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Friday, his latest step toward joining the rotation, but the Mariners don’t expect Lee to be removed from the 15-day disabled list before the end of April.

The St. Louis Cardinals’ new batting coach spent time in the batting cage with hitters, sat in on a lengthy staff meeting and then answered questions from reporters for more than 15 minutes.

A Major League Baseball executive says he won’t seek the Democratic nomination for Michigan governor. Robert Bowman, the chief executive of baseball’s online and interactive media operations, said in a statement Monday that he could not commit to the race at this time. Bowman works in New York but has a summer home in northern Michigan.

Right-hander Edwin Jackson and the Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to a $13.35 million, two-year deal, avoiding an arbitration hearing. Arizona announced the deal Sunday.
